Barbara Mellen has been working in glass since 1973. After nearly thirty years in stained glass she transitioned to dichroic kiln-fired earrings in 2001. She learned stained glass from the late Jack Cartlidge at New College in Sarasota, Florida, where she earned a degree in fine arts/illustration. In kiln work she is self-taught. Some of what she does is impossible according to books on the subject. For example, her earrings are thinner than most kiln-fired glass so they are not too heavy to be worn comfortably. She works extremely efficiently, allowing her to charge less than you would expect for the quality of her work. Sarah Mellen and Hilary Greenwell handcraft the tarnish resistant sterling silver earwires and pendant bails and pack orders for shipment, so Barbara can spend most of her time working with glass. Barbara has made tens of thousands of earrings in the past nine years, either one-of-a-kind or in groups of about six nearly identical pairs. Each bead consists of from one to over a dozen small pieces of glass, and is fired anywhere from one to four times with most earrings going through a kiln twice. |
